Student Design Days @BSA Space Age 4-7 introduce homeschool families to design, architecture, and hands on model building. A series of four classes are being offered in the fall of 2017 at BSA Space in downtown Boston. Student Design Days encourage children and adults to observe, explore, and design together. In these two hour hands-on workshops, students and their parents are introduced to architecture and design through exhibition tours or slide shows, and then work together to complete a hands-on design activity—drawing and/or building with basic art materials. Classes culminate in student presentations. Architects Polly Carpenter FAIA and Amy Ohman lead this program.

This program is designed for children and parents to work together.

You may sign your child up for the series, or individual classes. Registration is limited.

September 15: Temporary Structures
Inspired by the current exhibition in the gallery, participants will learn how materials can be utilized to create spaces that are functional and quick to erect, then will be given a hands-on challenge to design a temporary shelter using a kit of parts.

October 20: Housing Mythical Creatures
We will tour the colossal structures of Canstruction where architects and engineers have executed designs in full cans of food then use recycled materials to develop our own habitat for a mystical creature.

November 17: Bridges
We will learn about the many bridge types we have spanning our city’s waterways, then we will design our own bridges for a real site on the Fort Point Channel.

December 15: Gingerbread
We will first tour Gingerbread Houses designed by area architects and then create our own houses using edible materials.

Your registration includes acceptance of the BSA Space photo release and consent policy. Registrants to this event will be added to the BSA Space mailing list for updates on future public programs and exhibitions. Registrants may unsubscribe at any time. Email addresses will not be shared or sold to third parties.
