The Building Advocacy Lab is committed to empowering architects to shape policy on climate, civic life, and the profession.

The Civic Design Labs, the BSA’s platform for public engagement through architecture, brings architects together with residents, policymakers, and allied collaborators to explore how design can respond to complex civic challenges. The Building Advocacy Lab, embedded in this platform, is charged with developing and executing a strategic policy agenda that serves as the cornerstone of BSA’s advocacy efforts.

Through this work, it builds coalitions, creates design and policy tools, and cultivates leadership to strengthen architecture’s role in improving the built environment for all.

The Building Advocacy Lab’s work spans locally across Eastern MA, while also uplifting the work at the state (through AIA MA), and nationally (AIA national), to help members stay informed and engaged in policy initiatives and efforts:

  • AIA Massachusetts: The sole focus of AIA Massachusetts is advocacy and lobbying on behalf of all Massachusetts architects. From supporting legislation that affects the business practice of architects, partnering with state agencies to resolve problems quickly, and participating in state task forces and commissions, AIA Massachusetts supports the needs of the architectural profession and the quality of life for all citizens of the Commonwealth. • AIA National: AIA’s advocacy efforts are powered by the collective voice and actions of 98,000+ members. Together, we’re taking on urgent issues affecting the architecture profession and the AEC industry, in numbers that are making a difference. We provide talented, passionate professionals and committed community members with access to resources and leadership opportunities, helping them become a critical voice for change and a powerful voice for good.
