SGH 2017 Seminar Series—Seminar 1: Designing for Flooding and Sea Level Rise

  • COST

Free and open to the public

Presented by Gregory Doelp & Aaron Lewis, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger

Join us for the first in a four-part series of one-hour discussions hosted by Simpson Gumpertz & Heger this spring at Atlantic Wharf in Downtown Boston.

Changing FEMA maps, new requirements for resiliency, increasing attention on inland and coastal flooding, rising sea levels…owners, government officials, and the design community are constantly challenged with new policy and new forecasts about the impacts of climate change and the adapting building performance expectations in this new environment.

This presentation provides an introduction to identifying flood risks and designing buildings and other infrastructure for flooding. We will introduce FEMA Special Flood Hazard Areas (SFHAs), building code requirements for SFHA zones, and the basic approaches for wet and dry floodproofing. We will also discuss the forecasts for sea level rise and strategies for addressing sea level rise in building design and construction.
