Like it or not, money talks. Attractive first cost is often the only way to achieve high performance. But in pursuing high performance, there are many current challenges to this first cost approach. For example, the benefit of high performance strategies are often washed out with over-conservative HVAC sizing; out-of-date methods for calculating occupancy make it look like achieving targets for increased ventilation to improve cognitive function requires heavy oversizing that are cost prohibitive; small enough HVAC units aren’t available in the market for projects that have dramatically minimized loads. In other words, design decisions can no longer be guided by aesthetics, intuition, and out-of-date rule-of-thumb calculations alone: using data to question and inform every step of the design process is the only way to achieve higher performance and reduced cost. Jana Silsby AIA (CreativeX2), Jacob Knowles (BR+A), Heather Jauregui (Perkins Eastman) and Alejandra Menchaca (Thornton Tomasetti) will guide you through these (and more) challenges, and approaches to deal with them through an interactive game that uses real world experiences to showcase each scenario and engage audience members to solve their own challenges.

2 LU/HSW AIA credits are available

Drinks and light refreshments will be provided. Note start time: brief networking to occur at 5:45, and the workshop will begin at 6pm sharp.
