Topic 1 IAQ & COVID-19

Topic 2 Hazardous Materials: Lab Design – Making Sense of Conflicting Codes

Guest Speaker:
Andy Shanahan, Senior Project Manager
WB Engineers and Consultants

For this 4th session of the 2020 Codes Committee’s annual cycle of code presentations, we are pleased to welcome Andy Shanahan from WB Engineers.

Andy will open with a timely discussion of a topic of interest: Indoor Air Quality in the context of airborne pathogens like the coronaviruses. He will describe some techniques and systems available to building & systems designers to reduce exposure of the building occupants to these viruses, like electrostatic cleaning and dilution ventilation.

Andy will follow this with a review of storage and use of hazardous materials in labs. These are highly regulated by codes, NFPA standards, and insurance underwriters. Andy will dig into hazmat codes for labs, explaining IBC and NFPA, and how to apply codes that overlap. Andy will also explore how to design a lab space to meet these complicated requirements, including designing control areas and maximum allowable quantities of hazardous materials. Andy will go into the different lab classifications, lab protection by building code type, and chemical restrictions.

Please register to receive join information for this Zoom webinar. This information will be included in your confirmation email.

As a complement to the discussion our speaker will provide a PDF of the presentation, on request.
