A panel of diverse speakers will present their projects discussing their efforts and experiences in Placemaking with lessons learned. Through their work with city representatives, community groups, designers, and partners they expand the bounds of how to achieve successful placemaking. Mass Design Group’s Jonathan Evans will present planning for permanent placemaking through equitable partnerships with the design of forthcoming MLK Memorial in Boston Common. City representative, Michael Evans will show how the city uses temporary placemaking to activate our neighborhoods. In the Union Square Redesign, Crystal Bi Wegner from Design Studio for Social Intervention will share the importance of the community’s role for the development of places within the shared urban fabric. From the perspective of working with private developers, Shauna Gillies-Smith from Ground Landscape, will speak to the development of landscape design in public space. These projects should lead to an inspiring discussion on what placemaking can encompass.

The BSA Placemaking Group looks to seek inspiration for our new sub-committee to be leaders in the design community. We hope this group will engage with municipalities, community groups and developers, to address overlapping issues of placemaking, including sustainability, equity, open space, and civic memory. Reach out to David and Emeline to join the Placemaking Subcommittee.
