Building Enclosure Council: Rain Screen Design and Performance (Hybrid)

In this presentation, three presenters whose combined experience includes rainscreen cladding system design, consulting, manufacturing, sales, and installation share what they have learned regarding the key components of rainscreen cladding systems. Their insights help to explain why rainscreens have become the industry standard approach to addressing opaque wall area for projects of all scales, forms, and functions. A close look at the building science behind rainscreen assembly performance in terms of air, water, moisture, thermal, and fire performance can be expected - along with in depth discussion about what can and cannot be achieved within the myriad of various rainscreen cladding materials, their attachment, and the associated fabrication and installation methods. Pros, cons, possibilities and limitations of various materials and systems along with their implications to owners, designers and installers will be reviewed in detail.

An assembly applied to an exterior wall that consists of, at minimum, an outer/inner layer, and a cavity between them sufficient for the passive removal of liquid water and water vapor describes the basic components of a rainscreen.
