Since 2008, the Department of Neighborhood Development (DND), working with Boston Planning & Development Agency, Environment Department, energy providers, architects, and affordable housing developers, has successfully facilitated a number of activities in pursuit of the City’s Green Building Initiatives Program to reduce the carbon footprint of our development activities. This study and the resulting Zero Emissions Buildings Guidebook is DND’s most recent initiative to support Mayor Martin J. Walsh’s commitment to Carbon Neutrality in Boston by 2050.

Our consultant team for this project included Placetailor, Thornton Tomasetti, Elton Hampton Architects, and Bensonwood. These professionals worked together with DND staff to engage stakeholders during the study and development of the guidebook. This document analyzes best practices, provides case study recommendations on the performance of systems and wall assemblies that reduce energy use and eliminate carbon emissions in residential buildings across 4 building typologies common to DND’s portfolio of affordable housing projects.

We intend for the Zero Emissions Buildings Guidebook to set the groundwork to implement specific Zero Carbon Affordable Housing Design Standards within our design standards for DND funded projects. Therefore we are very interested in your feedback on the Guide.
