The session will focus primarily on the health and welfare components of multifamily housing projects with an accessibility purview and of the state and federal accessibility requirements in MA.

Objectives include:

  • Identify which accessibility requirements apply to multifamily housing projects in MA
  • Learn about the history and current climate of accessibility requirements relative to multifamily housing
  • Identify unit specific accessibility requirements of multifamily projects in MA
  • Identify common area specific accessibility requirements of multifamily projects in MA

The state and federal accessibility requirements, which have been developed primarily through the Disability Rights Movement, are intended to provide equal access to multifamily housing facilities for people with disabilities. Not designing and constructing to the accessibility requirements can be viewed as a form of discrimination. In addition, designing and constructing to the accessibility requirements results in spaces that are healthier and safer for all.
