Event Description

Loneliness and social isolation have soared around the world, having a profound impact on our physical, mental, and social health. Decades of research show it is linked closely to physical and mental health outcomes including dementia, heart disease, depression, and stroke, that it is especially important for older adults, and that supportive age-friendly environments can be part of the solution. The AARP Livable Communities initiative is helping to create a roadmap for cities to create more equitable and aging-friendly spaces. Many of the principals involved—easy walkability, safety, ample places to sit with shelter from the elements, and consistent sidewalks with curb cuts – foster social connection.

Join the Design for Aging Knowledge Community to learn about designing built environments for social health, and innovative approaches that bring disciplines together such as public health workers in addressing the loneliness epidemic.
