Event Description

This site tour will feature the phased conversion of floors 3 and 5 in the Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s Shapiro Building from existing outpatient and administrative areas into new inpatient units. The units pulled from the best inpatient med-surg room models across the MGB system to set a new standard for rooms at BWH. The rooms were designed to maximize clear criteria including ease of patient movement, visibility for observation, and staff interconnectivity. A flexible “collab hub” model was developed in lieu of traditional nurse stations to support team communication, staff wellness, flexibility, and multi-disciplinary care. The units were designed to make patients and families feel special, and promote the wellbeing of patients, caregivers, and staff.

On the tour you will visit three different units, two at different stages of construction and one completed open unit. You will learn some of the challenges associated with converting floors that were not originally designed for this purpose, including required infrastructure changes and modifications to window placement. You will also learn the impact phased construction had on the design and how the team dealt with issues of fire separation, phased infrastructure, and maintained patient and staff access. We hope you will join us on this tour to learn about one-way BWH is working to create more capacity and maximize their real estate through thoughtful design and planning. Please bring appropriate construction site PPE, as limited PPE will be available.
