DC Electrical Systems in Commercial Buildings

Plug loads amount to some 15% of a typical office building’s energy use, and DC power represents a significant fraction of this. The increasing use of PV on buildings adds even more DC to the mix. Conversion from DC to AC and vice versa is an inefficient process, and considerable energy could be saved by avoiding or minimizing it. This presentation will review use of DC and AC, lay out the argument for DC microgrids in buildings; and explain the barriers to their implementation.
