Event Description

As climate policies become more aggressive, complying with new energy and carbon mandates creates significant challenges for historic preservation teams. This session explores the latest design strategies that enable historic preservation projects to prioritize sustainability and decarbonization, while satisfying preservation imperatives and respecting historic fabric. Through a compelling and informative case study of Stone Mill Lofts, the pioneering preservation and adaptive reuse of a landmarked historic industrial complex in Lawrence, the presenter shares insight and actionable strategies relating to key considerations, including assessing the suitability of varied types of historic structure for energy retrofits, determining design solutions ranging from building electrification to full Passive House certification, and the process of collaborating with state and federal agencies to secure historic tax credits.
