Uncharted Waters: Critical Access 30 Miles at Sea

The Island of Nantucket, located 30 miles from the mainland of Massachusetts in the North Atlantic, presents unique climate and logistical considerations for the design and construction of a critical access facility. The Nantucket Cottage Hospital, the only medical center on the island, serves roughly 10,000 year-round residents and more than 50,000 during the summer tourist season. Partners Healthcare engaged CannonDesign to design the replacement hospital facility directly adjacent to aged building, which remains fully operational during construction.
