Tour of Boston Medical Center Clinical Campus Redesign

Boston Medical Center (BMC) was created by the merger of two separate hospitals in 1996, each with its own full service campus two blocks apart. Though this was a business merger, the separate functions did not merge operationally, resulting in the current “split” campus configuration, with costly operational inefficiencies with two complete sets of diagnostics and treatment centers and a full complement of beds at each campus. This causes the need for extra patient transport costs along with inefficient facilities and a large maintenance backlog.
The hospital is investing $350 million in a 5-year plan for a Clinical Campus Redesign (CCR), including a major Emergency Department expansion, new operating and diagnostic imaging suites and major infrastructure upgrades. Once completed, the redesign will provide clinical workspace with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment to solve BMC’s most pressing care delivery needs. The project will yield at least $25m/year in operational savings while realizing the dream of merging the two campuses into one efficient medical care delivery operation.
Every hospital’s infrastructure must reflect the new reality of mandated cost controls and changes in care delivery models. The CCR prepares BMC for the future with a 40% improvement in space utilization and a dramatic improvement in patient and community access to healthcare.
Join us for a tour of the CCR in progress. The tour will begin with an overview of the project given by Brendan Whalen, Director, Design and Construction at BMC and members of the design team from TRO.

Tour begins at 4:00pm on March 28, 2017. Please meet in the conference room in the Yawkey Building (850 Harrison) Basement level across from the elevator lobby.
Tour is limited to 30 people.

For those who qualify, 1.75 LU/HSWs are available.
