Roxbury Modern

In November, the HRC welcomes architectural historian, preservation planner, environmental review coordinator and educator Virginia H. Adams, who will speak about “Roxbury Modern,” a preliminary survey completed for a non-profit housing organization in Boston’s historic and storied Roxbury neighborhood. Her experience with survey, evaluation and nomination of Mid-Twentieth Century Modern resources includes large-scale survey and National Register nominations for houses throughout Connecticut (with a focus on New Canaan) and in Cape Cod National Seashore, as well as numerous studies of individual buildings.

Virginia Adams began her career in cultural resource management and historic preservation planning in 1977, and joined Public Archeology Laboratory (PAL) in 1987. A senior architectural historian, she currently manages architectural history and multi-disciplinary planning projects involving historic buildings and structures, landscapes and archaeological resources. Her technical expertise includes extensive experience in survey, National Register of Historic Places evaluation and nomination, regulatory compliance, archival documentation, historic tax credits and historical interpretation, and her portfolio contains a wide range of projects throughout the Northeast and elsewhere for public and private clients. Possessing detailed knowledge of state and federal laws, regulations, and standards for cultural resource management and related environmental impact requirements, Ginny also advises clients on meeting the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Buildings.

Ms. Adams received her B.A. in Art History and her M.A. in Anthropology, both from Brown University. Prior to joining PAL, she worked for eight years in state historic preservation offices on the Massachusetts National Register program staff and as the Rhode Island federal and state environmental review coordinator. She currently teaches in the Master of Historic Preservation program at The Boston Architectural College.
