A special letter from BSA Executive Director Danyson Tavares to membership, sent Monday, April 28, 2025.

Dear BSA members,

I'm writing to share an important update—and to invite you into the next chapter of the BSA’s story.

As of April 24, 2025, the Boston Society for Architecture has exercised our early termination right, and we will vacate our space at 290 Congress Street by October 2026.

This decision wasn’t easy. Our current home has meant a great deal to all of us. Moving into this bright, contemporary space in the heart of downtown Boston was a milestone for the organization. For over a decade, it’s provided a visible and welcoming platform for exhibitions, conversations, community events, and K–12 programming. It’s natural to feel some sadness as we prepare to say goodbye to a place that has played such a central role in our work and our memories.

At the same time, this moment calls us to think strategically about our future. Since the pandemic, the way we gather and use space has evolved. We've also faced challenges in activating the full potential of our current location—most notably the loss of street-level visibility and shared public space, as well as increasing overhead costs.

With the full support of our Board of Directors, we are embracing this as an opportunity to realign our resources with our mission. By reducing operating expenses, we can expand our investment in what matters most: programming that advances the profession, strengthens our community, and deepens public access to architecture and design.

And we won’t do this alone.

We’ll be leaning on you—our incredible community of architects, designers, and advocates—to help us imagine what comes next. What kind of space do we need? What should it feel like? How can it continue to serve both our members and the public as a civic platform for design?

Our vision is clear: a space that maximizes street presence, invites people in, and becomes a vibrant hub for celebration, learning, and design dialogue.

We’ll keep you informed as this journey unfolds—and we’re excited to build this future with you.

With appreciation and optimism,

Danyson Tavares
Executive Director, Boston Society for Architecture
