Doris Bunte Outdoor Activation Project

At the Boston Society for Architecture, we hold the sentiment that design is a civic act. We continue to advocate to broaden access to design that will allow for communities to shape the places they live, play, and work. The Doris Bunte Activation Project was designed to center the voices, needs, and aspirations of the community throughout the transformation of their shared outdoor space.

Grounded in principles of collaboration, trust-building, and inclusivity, this project outlined a phased approach to ensure that every resident, across diverse languages, cultures, and abilities, had the opportunity to meaningfully contribute to the final design and foster connection with each other.

The BSA, Boston Housing Authority, AARP MA, KMA Architecture + Accessibility, BSA Knowledge Communities Impact by Design (IxD) and Placemaking Network, and the residents of the Doris Bunte Apartments, co-created an outdoor space for residents to gather, connect and relax with neighbors, friends and family. The new outdoor space features: planters and greenery to bring warmth and color to the space, additional seating to accommodate socializing and resting, lighting for evening activities, and chess tables to encourage friendly play.

The finalized project was unveiled and celebrated on September 28th, Massachusetts Good Neighbor Day. Good Neighbor Day is a national event dedicated to fostering kindness, connection, and belonging. It was the perfect day to launch this project, host workshops, storytelling sessions, and enjoy one another’s company.

The BSA extends our heartfelt thanks to our partners and the residents of Doris Bunte for the opportunity to collaborate with you all, and look forward to continuing to find ways to create and advocate for more shared spaces that are rooted in connection.
