Northern Avenue Bridge Competition
First opened in 1908, the Northern Avenue Bridge has served pedestrians, cyclists, automobiles, and even freight trains throughout its life. Unfortunately continuous exposure to salt water and air has caused extensive corrosion of the steel structure, and the bridge was closed to all traffic over a year ago due to safety concerns.
With the rapid growth of Downtown and the South Boston Waterfront, Boston needs a Northern Avenue Bridge—one that enhances our mobility, celebrates our history, and creates a destination for the next 100 years. What the next iteration of the bridge looks and feels like is a question that remains to be answered, but the City of Boston and Mayor Martin J. Walsh are committed to the project.
