This gingerbread house tells a story inspired by the suburban towns surrounding Boston. It captures some (though not all) of the reasons people venture from the suburbs into the city. While Boston boasts many positive attributes, and I feel a deep connection to several parts of it, this project focuses on a few key aspects that resonate with me.
A universal Bostonian experience, whether you're a city resident or not, is attending a Red Sox game. Growing up in the suburbs, I would always take the T, just as many others do when heading to a game. I wanted this shared experience to be a focal point of the piece.
The charming streets of Back Bay and Beacon Hill are also central to my fondness for Boston. I incorporated the architectural language and character of these streets into my design.
Finally, as a tribute to the suburbs, I included a perspective of Boston that feels familiar to those on the city's outskirts: the view of Boston from a distance. Growing up in a western suburb, I often visited Larz Anderson Park, where there’s a breathtaking viewpoint of the city skyline. This perspective has always reminded me that Boston is home.
