Rotch Travelling Scholarship 2022

Smith Rotch 1

The project's orientation and massing are based in a communal version of what bell hooks describes as a Home Place: a space built to protect from outside domination, centering the humanizing act of gathering and resistance of black people as subjects rather than objects.

The Rotch Travelling Scholarship is an annual two-stage design competition that results in one person, deemed the Rotch Scholar, traveling the world for at least six months studying architecture.

In the first stage of the selection process, a weekend-long preliminary design competition is held. Finalists from this competition go on to compete in the second stage, a 10-day competition culminating in a design presentation to a distinguished jury.

The 2022 Rotch Travelling Scholar is William Smith, who will receive a $40,000 stipend to spend at least six months researching and travelling to study architecture.

The 2022 Rotch Finalists include:

William Smith (winner)

Hayley Bouza

Nathan Karlsen

Dylan Rupar

Ian Miley (runner-up)
