Working 9-5 in the dog days of summer can inspire longing for high school summer vacation. For the group of designers that gathered at BSA Space this month, however, it’s easy to remember it. After all, they just spent theirs working at some of the top architecture firms in Boston.

A survey by the Boston Business Journal found that the BSA ranked 10th on the list of business advocacy organizations in Massachusetts. The list includes Massachusetts-headquartered organizations.

Architecture is everywhere, and you can find Boston Society for Architecture members almost anywhere, too, even in the classroom. They were there this past spring, and no, they weren't lost. They belonged to a team of volunteers who visited classes in Boston and Cambridge to encourage young children to think more expansively about their neighborhoods and communities.

On typical days, 290 Congress Street is fairly quiet. But on the weekend of April 9 this year, the normally-serene lobby of the building was overrun with noise and covered with piles of recycled materials as it transformed into the site of multiple colorful construction projects.

Over the last four years, the BSA has partnered with Boston Public Schools’ Early Childhood Learning department to help teachers bring their “Construction” unit to life. In this unit, students learn from visiting architects about how cities are built and how different professions come together to create the built environment.

Design Thinking Days address the limited options for many students through Boston Public Schools (BPS) to become aware of architecture and design as a career pathway. The program gives students an introduction into the multiple aspects that the architecture industry encompasses; including interior design, computer science and technology, material and construction, and more.
